Open-access Between defense and border integration: Anapproach from tourism

Abstract:

When analyzing the issue of defense and security of borders, we face a phenomenon of continuous changes and great complexity. In the need to protect state territories, the vision of borders follows a sovereignty defense approach, which has prevailed over time with a militaristic focus on managing these areas. On the other hand, the growth of tourism has led to increased openness of borders, especially when associated with the potential for improving economic development in the region. This situation poses new challenges in terms of security. Tourism, driven by this border openness, represents a development opportunity for border regions. Border tourism takes advantage of the cultural fusion of neighboring regions and relies on the complementary asymmetries inherent in them. However, socioeconomic differences and political instability can affect both residents and tourists. Borders present a multidimensional challenge in terms of security and defense, but they also offer development opportunities through tourism. It is crucial to address these challenges comprehensively, considering both defense aspects and the economic and cultural possibilities that tourism can bring to border regions.
