Open-access Notes on Security and Defense on the Dominican land border

Abstract:

Border security and defense constitute two of the main pillars that support the development of a nation. In the specific case of the Dominican Republic, faced with the problem of irregular immigration, the trafficking of controlled substances, as well as the illicit trafficking of arms, fuel, merchandise and the commission of other crimes, both concepts are vital. In this sense, it is convenient that, mainly, the Dominican State, through the Armed Forces and other intelligence agencies, effectively determine where to direct the security and defense strategies and devices, along the border limits with Haiti. This means that Dominican society must be able to count on sufficient levels of security to be able to develop in an environment of peace and harmony. The Dominican State knows exactly that the common border with Haiti is a challenge that must be studied and analyzed, with the purpose of systematically confronting each one of the activities of organized crime, thus offering guarantees of development and growth of the surrounding communities. The border and with it the rest of Dominican society. This essay raises considerations for the achievement of a practical and objective approach to security and defense aspects, related to the land border that separates the Dominican Republic from Haiti, its characteristics, complexities and similarities with other scenarios in the region; being the main interest in this writing, to contribute to the strengthening of the institutional framework.
