Open-access Social media and music education: a pedagogical experience in initial teacher training

Instagram can be positioned as a resource for teaching music education thanks to its audiovisual format, which is useful for promoting student motivation and autonomy. This kind of approach was applied between 2019 and 2022, when 331 students enrolled in the Primary Education degree participated in a project that implemented this social network as a didactic enhancement. A private Instagram account was managed with publications linked to the contents, evaluating the experience through a satisfaction questionnaire. Now, the aim of this article is to justify Instagram’s educational possibilities for musical training through an account of pedagogical experience. In this way, under the methodology of investigation-action, a private Instagram account was established so that the posts tied to musical content, and it evaluated the students’ experience through a satisfaction questionnaire. The results suggest that the majority of the students were satisfied and considered the tool useful. Furthermore, they supported its application in other subjects, and they considered using it in their future teaching work. For all these reasons, Instagram could be considered an effective resource for teaching music by improving the assimilation of content and encouraging academic interaction within an accessible digital environment
